Colic Baby Treatment - Colic Calm
If you are reading this blog, you are most likely a parent with a baby who won't stop crying and are looking for clear and concrete examples of what you can do to soothe your inconsolable baby.
How do you know if your baby is a colic baby?
Colic is diagnosed by the "rule of Threes" - if a baby cries at least three hours a day, three days per week, for three weeks in a row, then that baby is considered to be suffering from colic. Colic usually starts when the baby is two weeks old and ends when the baby is 100 days old, which is approximately three and a half months of age. In addition, premature baby is no more likely to suffer colic than a full term baby.
The sound of the cry of a colic baby is much more intense than that of other babies. A colic cry is often described as a piercing, relentless scream. It can stop as abruptly as it starts and is often heard during or immediately after a feeding, especially in cases when it is due to a gastrointestinal problem (infant reflux). The colic baby sounds as hough he is in tremendous pain. His face may be twisted and strained, causing onlookers to be highly concerned. If the colic baby symptoms are caused by reflux problems, signs of relief may not be apparent until after the infant passes gas or has a bowel movement. It seems to be much worse at night and during the evening hours.
Cause of colic
The most common cause of colic is stomach problems. Gas, constipation, , acid reflux, and overactive intestines are cited most frequently as the causes of colic baby. This is understandable considering the fact that all four of these factors can lead to a feeling of discomfort, causing a baby to cry.
Two different types of stomach problems are cited in the literature. One is much more severe than the other. The less severe problem is characterized by great discomfort due to problems with the baby's digestive system. A baby's digestive system is not fully mature until he or she is 100 days old. Therefore, gas and constipation may cause such great distress that the baby cries out in pain. The more severe problem is characterized by severe abdominal pain due to intestinal illness, such as stomach acid reflux. The good news is that newborns who have this medical problem can be treated naturally. In other words, under this specific circumstance, there is a cure.
Infant acid reflux
If a colic baby suffers from acid reflux, it means that acid and other stomach contents repeatedly flow back up into the esophagus. Every baby experiences some form of acid reflux at some time. Remember, babies have an immature digestive system, which is not fully developed until they are approximately 100 days old. For babies who are otherwise healthy, this problem occurs until their system matures.
The good news is that there are treatment interventions for infant acid reflux. Most doctors recommend that elevating the head of the baby's crib, or basket can reduce the chances of acid reflux and at the same time will not harm the colic baby. Placing the colic baby into an upright position both during and after feedings for approximately thirty minutes is also often helpful in reducing the chances of acid reflux.
If infant acid reflux is severe or does not get better with time, your doctor may recommend the use of medication as a treatment intervention. Over-the-counter medications primarily help with the problem of abdominal pain due to gassiness. For example, gripe water is what your doctor, lactation specialist, or advice nurse may recommend.
Natural treatment of colic baby - Colic Calm
Colic baby who is suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (also known as infant GERD) can be treated naturally with certain gripe water, such as Colic Calm. Gripe water is a product that originally came from England and is now being manufactured in the United States. It is often given to baby who is colicky in order to soothe their stomachs. It contains two simple ingredients: ginger and fennel. Ginger and fennel have been shown to be beneficial for easing nausea and pain due to stomach upset, even in adults. This product contains no fillers, binders, artificial flavors, artificial color yeast, wheat, gluten, soy, dairy, or starch. Therefore, many professionals will recommend it over some of other products that are manufactured for the same purposes because there is no side effect. A popular example of gripe water is Colic Calm.

HYPOTHERMIA TREATMENT FOR BABY GOATS
A goat's body temperature lower than 100 is dangerously low. It needs to be above 100 for their body to function correctly. The normal temperature of a goat is 101.5-103.5F. If a goat's temperature is below 100, the first thing you need to do is get the goat temperature up to at least 100. The best way I have found is to encase the goat in a plastic bag up to the neck and immerse it into a tub of warm water (103.5F. up to 105F.) (Don't get the goat wet.) Massage the legs while he/she is in there to get circulation going. Pull the goat out after about 10 to 20 minutes to check his/her temperature. If it is still low, repeat this process until the temperature is up to 100F. or above. When you get the temperature up place him/her on a heating pad -- cover the heating pad with a blanket and lay the goat on it -- turning him/her over every few minutes. Watch very carefully -- this can dehydrate. You can take a sock, cut four leg holes in it and put it on him/her for a sweater to hold in body heat. If the goat is dehydrated, you need to get Lactated Ringers (from vet) and give her 30 cc at each shoulder -- there will be a knot of fluid but it will soon disappear. If you have CMPK or MFO, (available at most feed stores or through livestock catalogs) give 1/4 of 1 cc orally about every 30 minutes until he/she gets 8 cc of it. You can also give him/her 1 cc of Vitamin B twice a day. Another thing, this is a homemade remedy:
If it sounds like he/she is developing pneumonia, Nuflor (vet prescription) seems to be the antibiotic of choice for this -- 1 cc per 25 lbs. Also available by prescription is Excenel (Naxcel) also very good for treatment of pneumonia. If you don't have either, give Penicillin -- 1 cc per twenty pounds body weight. Be sure to keep that body temp up. By: Barbara Howard |

Treatment Options For A Baby Allergy
Dealing with a baby allergy can be difficult for parents; they often work very hard to keep their child from whatever they have an allergy to and then often need to help the child cope with an allergy attack when it does happen. It's imperative for a parent to understand natural treatment options for any baby allergy as of course you never want to give your child any over-the-counter or prescription medication unless first advised by your doctor. Medications designed for adults can be harmful and even fatal for a baby.
First of all, remember that it's very common for a child to suffer from a baby allergy. Allergies are the result of the immune system not responding properly to fight off irritants and of course a baby's immune system is nowhere near as developed as it should be. Allergies can and often are outgrown by children, so even if your child has severe allergies now this doesn't mean he or she will be suffering from them forever.
Also, when dealing with a baby allergy make sure you're not doing anything to irritate it further. While your baby may be allergic to certain food or elements in the air, switching to allergen-free detergents and personal care items can help tremendously. Be sure that whatever you use for your baby allergy that you're not overmedicating as this can only further irritate the allergy. Get a HEPA filter for the home or the baby's nursery, and apply a warm wet cloth to the baby's chest to clear any lung irritations.
Use Eucalyptus or olbas oil in boiling water and allow the child to inhale the steam that is being generated. This treatment is also very good for any type of stuffy nose due to a cold, flu or allergy problems. Both readily diffuse into the air and can provide benefits to nasal and bronchial areas. If your baby suffers from air-borne allergies then an environment with a high humidity will be of benefit because air with a high humidity content does not carry air-borne contaminates well. Extra moisture in the air will also help to remove any pollen or other allergy producing pollutions from the air.
When treating a baby allergy for the skin, use products that list oils as their first ingredients rather than the diaper rash cream you get at the pharmacy. Sunflower oil, cocoa butter, aloe, shea butter, olive oil, rosewater, and other natural oils are going to be better on baby's skin than harsh creams and treatments. Make sure the products also have no synthetic fragrances. Zinc oxide is also a natural treatment option for a baby allergy of the skin as it forms a natural urine barrier to protect the skin from wet diapers.
If you have done all you can to treat the baby allergy then it's time to see a doctor. While parents often prefer to use natural ingredients and avoid harsh medications and other treatments, it is also important that a child be treated properly especially in the case of a severe allergy. Failure to see a doctor and get medical intervention in severe cases can result in tragedy. So use all the natural treatment options you can for your own baby allergy but don't rule out bringing your precious baby to the doctor as well.
Always consult your doctor before using this information.

Breakthrough in fertility treatment produces first baby, researchers say
The first baby born from a pioneering fertility treatment was announced by doctors yesterday, raising hopes for thousands of women who are unable to have conventional IVF for medical reasons.
The mother was infertile because of abnormalities in her ovaries caused by a syndrome that affects the fertility of up to one in five women in Britain.
A team of doctors led by Hananel Holzer at the McGill Reproductive Centre in Montreal extracted eggs from the woman which had not gone through the usual maturation process in the body and so would normally be unsuitable for IVF. The eggs were matured in a dish by exposing them to hormones, before being frozen and stored.
One of the eggs was later thawed out, fertilised and implanted into the woman, who gave birth to a girl last year. Three other women are pregnant having received similar treatment, Dr Holzer told the annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Lyon yesterday.
Many women with severe versions of polycystic ovarian syndrome cannot be given standard fertility treatment because the high doses of hormones used to stimulate egg production can trigger a potentially life-threatening reaction.
Twenty women with polycystic ovaries volunteered to have their eggs frozen as part of a research programme into egg storage. The eggs were frozen for no more than a few months. The average age of the women was 30. Of 215 eggs that were frozen, 148 survived and 96 were successfully fertilised after being thawed out. Three embryos were implanted into each woman.
"Until now, it was not known whether eggs collected from unstimulated ovaries, matured in vitro and then [frozen] could survive thawing, be fertilised successfully and result in a viable pregnancy after embryo transfer," said Dr Holzer. "We have demonstrated for the first time that it is possible to do this and so far we have achieved four successful pregnancies, one of which has resulted in a live birth."
The doctors said the success rate had increased throughout the study, with three pregnancies being achieved in the last five patients.
The treatment could benefit women with a variety of medical conditions that make them unsuitable for conventional fertility treatment, including some breast cancers. Many women diagnosed with cancer receive chemotherapy which risks leaving them infertile, but the urgency of their therapy means they cannot delay to have four to six weeks of hormonal injections that can be used to produce mature eggs that could be stored for later use. The new technique suggests that eggs could be taken from these women immediately and matured in the lab before being frozen.
Welcoming the advance, Laurence Shaw, deputy medical director at the Bridge Fertility Centre in London, said: "When women with polycystic ovarian syndrome are stimulated with hormones, there is a very high chance of them becoming over-stimulated. Their ovaries recruit and mature follicles, which swell up and absorb fluid from the body. This can stop the woman producing urine and later cause kidney failure. There is no real treatment for it."

Common Baby Illnesses And The Treatment
Common Baby Illness: Cold
Cold is the common illnesses in most baby. It's caused by a virus. It's sometimes difficult to tell whether a baby actually has a cold or just has the normal baby snuffles.
A baby with a cold looks miserable and sounds 'wet'. Mucus flows from his nose. The mucus may slip down the back of his throat and make him cough. A baby finds it difficult to breathe and has trouble eating and sleeping.
There's no cure for a cold nor any medicine that makes the cold get better any quicker. You may give your baby some paracetamol to help reduce fever and discomfort. But remember that paracetamol is not a treatment for the cold itself. Some other medications may be dangerous so check with your doctor before using any. Mucus symptoms such as noisy breathing and a blocked nose can persist for six to eight weeks after the cold has gone, as babies take a lot longer to clear their bodies of mucus than adults do.
See your doctor if your baby loses interest in food, becomes floppy, develops a fever that won't come down, has difficulty breathing or develops blue lips.
Common Baby Illness: Cough
When coughing is associated with wheezing, a high fever, breathlessness or sleepless nights, you need to see your doctor. It is dangerous to give a cough suppressant to a baby or young child. Worrying coughs should always be investigated.
Common Baby Illness: Croup
Croup involves narrowing of the voice box and windpipe and is more common in toddler than in baby. It usually follows a viral infection in the upper respiratory tract that affects the voice box. The baby's cough sounds like a baby seal barking. The cough is accompanied by a 'crowing' noise as he breathes in.
A baby with croup may feel a little better if breathing warm, moist air. This can be done with vaporizers or by steaming up the bathroom. if the baby doesn't respond well to this and has difficulty breathing, go straight to your doctor or to a hospital emergency department.
Common Baby Illness: Diarrhea
Diarrhea means there are a lot of loose, watery bowel motions that are often mucusy, very smelly and a different colour to a baby's usual stools. Sudden diarrhea is usually caused by a viral infection in the gut (gastroenteritis). It's uncommon for exclusively breastfeed babies to get gastroenteritis during the first three months after birth, so don't confuse the normal loose green/yellow motions that young breastfeed baby pass with diarrhea.
It's also unusual for bottle fed baby to get gastroenteritis in the first three months as long as the water supply is reliable and the correct procedures are used to ensure safe bottle-feeding.
Medication is not a part of treatment for most cases of infectious of diarrhea. Antibiotics are only used occasionally for a specific, diagnosed bacterial infection. Medications such as adults take to stop the vomiting or diarrhea are dangerous for baby and should never be given.
The correct treatment for diarrhea is oral rehydration with fluids that contain some sugar and some salt - for example, diluted (non diet) fruit cordials. This is best achieved by giving frequent small amounts of fluids for 24 hours. However, if you are breastfeeding, you should continue with just breastfeeding, offering your baby extra breastfeeds too. For older baby who are eating food, a balanced diet should be recommenced as soon as possible, but continue to give only small amounts for a few days.
Most children respond well to reintroducing their normal diet early on in the course of gastroenteritis - although they may vomit after eating, or have some further diarrhea. However, their intestines are likely to recover more quickly if their normal diet can be reintroduced sooner.
Rarely, baby develops a temporary lactose intolerance following gastroenteritis that means their watery diarrhea comes back once full strength formula or milk is reintroduced. When this happens a lactose-free formula is required for two to three weeks until the bowel recovers. Breastfeed baby tolerate breast milk well and don't need lactose free formula.
Manu baby respond to these measures, but unfortunately there are times when the correct advice is not given or parents and health professionals underestimate the severity of the illness. If in doubt, take your baby to the nearest emergency department of a major hospital.
